i like that modification to the route and it would probably only be like 5-5.5 hours of a one way ride, since google maps wrongly predicts the time.

On another note, since there is a really good possibility that their will be two rides, one for SCARS and another for EHS, then how about we do the ride to Canmore in june for SCARS and the ride to slave lake, option 4, for the EHS in late august?
since so far those are the two most popular one day rides, unless there are any other suggestions. Then if both are a success, and i think they will be, then next year maybe a weekend ride to somewhere.

for option 1) the scenery may not be very interesting but the road is fun, with the exception of highway 16.

option 2) we would not be taking highway 2, it would be highway 22 (cowboy trail) then onto 1A/40 which is a nice twisty windy road, perfect for bikes. Thereby fully avoiding Calgary and all the traffic around Calgary.

option 3) i’ve never been done there but i heard it was interesting

option 4) seems to be a fun ride to me but i’m afraid of the traffic going to the lake if its a nice day

        but thanks for the feedback

i didn’t realize canada day long weekend is the first saturday of july, oops. so i guess the one of the last two saturdays of June, unfortunately the SCARS rep is taking forever to get back to me.

But the EHS seems to be really excited about the idea, i’m told i’ll know whether they want to go along with it by the end of january.

SCARS is interested in in for the end of june early july, especially since they have their own event on around that time and it would be nice if they could be coordinated to be the same time. My thinking is one of the last two saturdays of june or first one of july.

Also, as a side note the edmonton humane society is a little interested with having one in late august, so if it doesn’t work out with SCARS we can have one for the EHS.

I like the Canmore ride, especially if we take 1A there, nice and curvy and very little used. So perfect for bikes.

my plan is a full day ride, its just 4 hours one way and  4 hours back, give or take some depending on weather, eating and route.

My favourite ideas to go to canmore down the alternative highways, avoiding QE2 and trans canada 1. or to do a long roundabout trip to the rocky mountain house, never been there myself. or a trip up to lave lake area.

i dont know much about those bikes, but if you are looking for something sporty and touring capable i would suggest something like the honda St1100/1300, suzuki vstrom, or even the bmw Rt series.

the bmw ones are pretty expensive, whereas the other two you can get for around 4-6 thousand dollars used depending on the options that are on it, i.e the hard cases and etc.

could always easily avoid highway 2 on the ride to canmore… i am always open for suggestions as long as its reasonable

i just posted a poll that contains 4 possible rides for the event in mid-late June.

All the rides start and end in St. Albert mainly because each year SCARS holds an adoption event there and i think it would be great if the ride could be co-ordinated to be on the same day as well as start/finish at the same place as the event.

My favourite ride that i made is the one to Canmore because it is off a main highway so it is less used, it is a fun curvy ride once you start getting closer to Canmore and there is also a great restaurant/brewery called “the grizzly paw” there. Also, it says that it takes 10hrs to do the ride but it would probably be more like 8 since there is very little traffic on the road.

my next favourite ride is the one up to swan hills then down to whitecourt because it is a decent ride to swan hills and on the way back i made it go through pembina river provincial park, which is a short 2km curvy, hilly road but it is fun and beautiful there.

the total ride would be 8-9 hours, i am looking for a 4 hour one way trip.

It would be fun to make a multiple day trip, but i want to make it into an annual thing and i believe that it would need to start out as a day trip and eventually expand to a multiple day trip in the second and third years

like i said, it would be someplace about 4 hours away from edmonton, now that i think about it, maybe we can go to Sundre via Breton and Rocky mountain house?

Also, i dont find the road to drumheller fun, except for a few short stretches, but there are some fun roads to ride around in that area

Well, figured out the the ride will be for SCARS(second chance animal rescue society) and it will probably start earlyish in the morning on a saturday in July.
The early plan is that the ride will start in Edmonton and go south for 3-4 hours, at this point other riders can join up in the ride or depart, then the ride would go back to Edmonton.
Not sure where the stop will be, im thinking cochrane area. The plan would be to get there by 1130-12 so that we could leave to go back to edmonton by 1.
I am also hoping that there could be a small event put on at each site where riders can join in on the ride.
The plan for riders to participate would be a minimum $5 donation, but i am hoping to get a couple places to donate something, like a coupon, to make it more appealing to participate. Also, for the riders to particpate it would be nice for them to collect pledges.

None of this is set in stone, it is still an early plan.

i dont have a hitch, i dont even a big enough bike yet. Im planning on getting a bigger bike, and the trailer is just something im thinking of. Be better to do camping trips with it then with a car, my dog is only between 50 and 60 lbs, so not too bad.

i just want a fully enclosed trailer with that also has good air circulation, so then its not to hot for a dog.
ah well, maybe in the spring/summer there will be trailers up for sale

i haven’t, but then again i am not that handy with building things. Unless its a small scale item.

but i now do have the idea of paying someone to build me one, as long as its not too expensive
