@madjak – Yes I still have the bird. Just sold the KLR650 though, I don’t know if I should call it a pig or a mule but damn I have never had such mixed feelings about a motorcycle. After dumping it infinite number of times on trails, crossing rivers, mud patches, it made through pretty much every challenge I threw at it. And it was a blast riding it through all that because I was never sure, but its huge, heavy and sweats like a pig.

On pavement its slow, boring, and feels like a mule. It really feels like dragging itself through each gear. Everything stock is crap. The stock saddle is the most uncomfortable I have every been in, stock windshield is no good, stock skid plate is plastic, brakes are worse than a bicycle, I had to spend $5 on a crappy wrist watch to mount it on the handlebars to keep track of time! No fuel gauge, a single blip to show turn signal. And known to require another half dozen engine mods from stock for ‘reliability’. Over 25 years in production and its still a piece of crap if stock (and even otherwise IMO).

It has a huge aftermarket following and has parts available for any mods one would desire, but there a basic amount of bike that I need if I’m paying $8,000 and it simply does not fulfill that.
So yeah, I can invest $5,000 in it from stock and make it capable of doing dozens of things without excelling in any of them, but then I can rather just spend the $13,000 on another competing dual-sport/adventure bike and do all that just as well without the trouble of ‘building’ a KLR650.

That is exactly it though! Its like a canvas. Its customizable, and thats the biggest selling point. Its a poor mans motorcycle – if you don’t need much you can stay mostly stock and ride it like a cheap whore. Or you could dress it up, teach it some manners, and have it appear as an expensive escort gal.

Bottom line, I would always start riding it feeling unhappy with its existence but by the end it would somehow surprise me of its capabilities. I had tons of fun riding it hard and dumping it fearlessly. I even dumped it in the river once and had it almost fully submerged but it came out and started without much kicking or swearing.

        Faz,
Great write-up on the KLR. That is exactly how I felt about mine. A good bike BUT needing lots of “tuning” both mechanical and physical. You are right about “stuff” for the KLR…lots of aftermarket.  I had mine pretty nice, panniers, seat, windscreen, etc, etc. (lots of $$$) and even went to the Island and Alaska on it !! But in the end ….I just didn’t LOVE it!! (Well….it’s not a Honda !!! LOL)
I now ride a 2013 Honda NC700x …I out-fitted for “gravel travel” ….fits me and my riding style pretty good. I don’t need to “bush wack” but just want to be able to go down any road (paved/gravel not goat trail) in Alberta. I hope to ride the FTR this year and site-see abit.

AND I just picked up a sweet 2013 CBR500r….for commuting and having fun on !! Sure nice to have 2 bikes in the stable again !! 1=laid back and relaxed  OR 2= fast and fun !!

I like the idea of a meet up at SRC.  I am thinking of doing a camping trip on April 16-17-18 and 19th  through the parks and around the Abraham lake area.

I’ll be getting the bike out either the 17th or 18th…maybe meet in Rocky Mountain House for a coffee?

I bought it with a bunch of upgrades too like a corbin saddle, taller windshield, highway pegs hah, progressive forks, etc. and since I got all original parts I had the opportunity to put it back to stock for testing.

I test rode the CBR500 and it was a pretty fun ride. I’m on the look out for a KTM SMT myself, they are hard to find but if I manage to get my hands on one I’d probably keep that as a do-it-all. Will sell the Bird and VFR.
Couple of brand new 2013’s sitting on showroom floors in ON  :-\

We should meet up! Bullseye, Pedersoli, tucsondawg – any of you guys in Calgary?

Anyone want to meet at the south Timmies in RMH at around 1pm? Might be a nice ride for those from Calgary or Edmonton…I can’t be gone all day, so I’ll just be looping back on Hwy 12 after but others are free to join me for the loop too.

I can’t do the epic rides until my schedule changes…hopefully soon!

                  Later.

Not going to be available to join in at this Saturday’s event.
Should be available for the day following though (Sunday)………..Any others who’d be interest in possibly a mid morning Sunday departure….. let me know. Can use the sidecar if we’re running through Edmonton and just touring locally. Otherwise I use the big bike for highway cruising.

In camp working Sunday…contract ends Monday, then I’m job hunting.
Kinda scary times in energy sector…not sure NDP will be a help, but hoping they won’t be hurting us as much as most fear  :-\

I have a couple leads, but it seems like there’s nothing until mid June…I’ve already sat for two months this year, can’t afford anymore “vacation time”

Glad that you’ve managed to sort out work Madjak! I just relocated to Calgary – looking forward to spending some more time riding this season, as last season was a disaster… Adult life is too full of responsibilities :-\

                                  Totally agree!!
I head off to Hardisty on June 15th…home every second weekend.

Last year was a write off for me too…life’s been nutty since my separation/divorce. Smoothing out now though (new wifey likes riding  ;D )
